Iconic Encounter
Encounter is the name of this sculpture by Stephen Broadbent, built in 2002. Standing 28m (91 feet) high, it was the tallest public artwork when built.
Encounter has become an iconic symbol of Birchwood and representations of it are used by numerous businesses and organisations.
Situated at Junction 11 of the M62, access to the artwork is difficult, but some of the best viewpoints are from the open spaces of nearby Gorse Covert Mounds and Pestfurlong Hill.
